Women in Business THON 2019

Join us in our commitment to turn childhood dreams into reality by supporting THONTM. Our Organization, Women in Business, is taking action by uniting with 16,500 student volunteers and over 25,000 alumni supporters in the fight against childhood cancer. Our year-long efforts culminate in a 46-hour, no-sitting, no-sleeping dance marathon each February to celebrate our survivors, remember those we’ve lost, and take a stand--all in hopes of one day dancing in celebration of a cure.
Since 1977, THON has raised over $157 million for Four Diamonds at Penn State Children’s Hospital, providing comprehensive care for 4,000 families and funding critical research to take this fight beyond central Pennsylvania and spread hope around the world. We work year-round to provide both financial and emotional support for our families, ensuring that they never have to face cancer alone.
Who we are:

Women in Business was founded in October of 1997 under the direction of Jocelyn Bennett, the Coordinator of Minority Affairs within the Smeal College of Business Administration.  During the spring semester of 1998, WIB received its official charter from the University. Starting out with only seven members, WIB has grown enormously over the past twenty years, and now boasts over 350 members. Throughout the years, WIB has defined four pillars of the organization: Leadership, Community Service, Networking, and Professional Development. Currently, WIB welcomes both male and female undergraduate students of all majors into the organization.

Meet Our Families:

The Newcomb Family:

Women in Business was paired with the Newcomb family right before THON 2017. MaryAnn, our THON child, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) at 18 years-old. MaryAnn’s battle with ALL has not been an easy one, but she said it’s been made much doable with the support of WIB and the Four Diamonds Fund. When she’s feeling up to it, Maryann continues to follow her passions of sailing, golfing, hanging out with her friends, and horseback riding. She even competes in jumping with her two horses! In her free time, Maryann loves to travel! Before she was diagnosed, she was planning to be an exchange student in Costa Rica for a year. Along with her family, which includes her parents, Celeste and Brian, and her two siblings, William (15 years old) and Alexandra (10 years old), WIB will be there to support Maryann throughout her journey ahead. She inspires us each day with her impeccable strength and determination!

The Camacho Family:

Women in Business was first paired with the Camacho Family in 2004 and has continued to be paired with them ever since!  Our THON child, Lakeisha, born on July 19, 2002 in Lebanon, PA, was only 10 months old when she started developing symptoms that eventually led to her diagnosis of Leukemia. After 15 hospital stays, 152 visits to the doctor, and 23 trips to the emergency room, Lakeisha took her last dose of chemotherapy in January of 2006. She has been in remission and off-treatment ever since! Lakeisha’s mom, Tonya, has been an inspiration to WIB, coming through tough times always in good spirits and hoping for the best. Along with her mom, Lakeisha’s family includes two younger sisters Lelani, Lakjya, a brother Lenox, and a half-sister, Kiara.

Over the past few years, Women in Business has been able to do many fun things with the Camacho Family and they have become a huge part of our organization. Every year, WIB looks forward to spending THON weekend with the entire family dancing and playing games! WIB also enjoys visiting the Camacho Family in Lebanon, PA for our annual pizza and ice skating trip. On top of all of the fun activities Lakeisha does with WIB, she also enjoys hanging out with her friends and going to the beach. Lakeisha will forever be an inspiration to WIB and continues to teach us new things every day. She is always smiling and full of excitement!  Lakeisha hopes that one day everyone can overcome cancer and be healthy just like her!

The Lesniak Family:

Women in Business was paired with the Lesniak Family in February of 2013. Megan, our THON child, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma right before her 16th birthday and immediately started treatment at Hershey Medical Center. Megan has always been an inspiration to WIB and she represents the four diamonds that THON stands for, most specifically, “strength”. Megan expressed to WIB that a main goal she had during her battle was to continue living her life as though she wasn’t sick. Since then, Megan has overcome the trials of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and is now more than 5 years in remission! Megan is now in her 20’s and since beating cancer she got a tattoo signifying her victory and also commemorating her late Aunt Shirley. Recently, Megan has been rather busy with her studies and she began working as a registered nurse on a medical-oncology floor. Additionally, Megan has earned her chemo certification and is currently working to complete her RN-BSN! WIB could not be more proud of Megan for all she has achieved; from beating cancer to accomplishing her dreams! Women in Business is no longer officially paired with the Lesniak Family as Megan humbly decided that it would be best for our organization to focus its efforts towards children currently battling cancer. Megan and her family will always be an important part of Women in Business. They forever hold a special place in our hearts
